Fishhook Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus wislizeni)
Fishhook Barrel Cactus
The Fishhook Barrel Cactus, also known by its botanical name Ferocactus wislizeni, is native to Arizona and Mexico, and as you can tell by its common name, features an attractive barrel-shape, making this a popular cactus for both homeowners and landscapers alike here in Southern California. Its unique shape and stunning bright orange to yellow flowers that emerge when in season makes the Ferocactus wislizeni a must-have for anyone that wants to add a dramatic effect into any succulent or xeriscape garden. This is a valuable ornamental plant for urban areas, too. They also look equally impressive planted in a pot and placed in a front porch or entryway!
This is a slow growing cactus that thrives where there is plenty of full sun exposure or partial shade. It’s a very waterwise plant, and once established, needs low to moderate watering needs. Fishhook Barrel Cactus is tolerant of extreme heat as well as cold and it’s so easy to grow that once it has been established in your landscape, it requires very little attention or special care! This is a long-lived medium to large cactus that will bring many years of enjoyment!
Fun facts: the Fishhook Barrel Cactus is sometimes called the “Compass Barrel” because some of the larger plants tend to lean towards the southwest! The pulp of the barrel cactus has been widely used for making cactus candy. Adding to its already impressive features is the edible pineapple-shaped fruit it produces!
